Avogadro and Maciej (by Adam Mickiewicz)

How to measure 6,022045(31) x 1023 ? How much it will be? Billion of billions or million of millions of millions?

The first numerical determination of the Avogadro’s number we find in Adam Mickiewicz’s „Pan Tadeusz” part VII :

do [up to] milijonów [millions] kroćset [of many hundreds] kroci [of many] tysięcy [thousands] fur [of trucks] beczek [of barrels] furgonów [of waggons] (of devils!!!) ”,

but it was highly unprecise!

Avogadro himself, a lawyer, launched this hypotesis of constant number of atoms in a mole, but without giving any idea how to measure it. That’s why in German literature it is used the term "Loschmidt’s number", who gave the first recipee how to measure it (from the liquid viscosity).

For others methods, see next pages .
