The Migrant Bird

The Migrant Bird

The bird raises and lowers its wings: when it raises its wings, it lowers its body, when it lowers its wings, it raises its body. It's moved by the same force which moves a little sphere hanging at a wire which oscillates to the left and to the right: the force of gravity.

The bird is built in a way that every single movement, up or down, raises the centre of gravity.

Therefore it oscillates to make the centre of gravity come to the minimum height. The slowness of the motion is due to the nearness of the barycentre to the centre of suspension and to the big moment of inertia of the "pendulum".
